Science and Environmental Education

Working together to solve problems and participate in guided inquiry in LEC's unique learning environment helps students apply important concepts to real world situations. It is hands-on application of what they learn in the classroom and an introduction to new concepts. It is learning assimilation in action.

Along the way, teamwork, socialization, respect for others and Nature are integrated into academics and recreational classes. Understanding and participating in a community of learning reinforces self-responsibility in a group setting. Parents and teachers frequently report a positive change in program graduates' attitude toward learning.

Students socialize with fellow classmates in a residential structured community environment that promotes respect of each other and getting to know and understand each other better. This is around the clock time spent learning about and with classmates. Parents and teachers observe learning in new ways that help them to better understand the students.

Students describe their LEC experience as helping them to develop a memorable sense of “connectedness” that motivates them to approach studies and life in new ways.

Stimulation of mind and body are both vital to the outdoor learning experience. In addition to varying degrees of physical activity involved in our classes, LEC offers specific recreation programs that include lacrosse, archery, canoeing fishing, hiking, swimming, skiing, showshoeing and dogsledding.

Academic classes are 2 1/2 hours in length with 30-40 minutes of classroom time and the remainder of the time outdoors. Recreation classes are 1 1/4 hours in length and held outdoors. Evening programs are a mix of character actors that teach in an entertaining way, games, storytelling and slideshows. At LEC learning is FUN and MEMORABLE!

Together, as a community, students gain an appreciation for the natural environment and the role they can play to manage it responsibly. They learn to work together to think and to solve problems in respectful ways.
